I Am: A Portrait Series - Sheryl Lee

"The only time you run out of chances is when you stop taking them."

Elegance

Born in Malaysia, Sheryl Lee spent her growing up years in Singapore and pursued her college degree in the U.S. Soft-spoken and accompanied with a sweet disposition, she chatted with us about her life in Seattle -  from working at the food court as a student to being a part of the corporate world in the pharmaceutical, technology, and the cruise line industry. Sheryl moved back to Singapore in late 2015 with her husband, decided to make fashion her full-time job and pursued a Diploma in Fashion Design. Three years later in April 2018, she launched Some Random Workspace, a creative community platform where like minded fashion designers and creatives work together and inspire one another.

What does Elegance mean to you?
Kindness and grace.

What does women’s empowerment mean to you?
Empowerment isn’t about equality. It is about enabling women to fully maximise their potential.

What keeps you motivated and driven?
My curiosity and belief that no problem is unsolvable. When I tackle a new problem, I learn something new. Cracking the code brings me joy. I must admit, I don’t find the perfect solution every time, but it is part of the amazing journey of endless learning.

Who has been the biggest influence to you?
My grandma. She is an independent woman who does not conform to social norms. She always encourages me to be brave and never let others rain on my parade. I recalled someone made fun of my broken Mandarin when I was young. My grandma told her off and said to me, “the only way you will improve is to continue speaking and practicing”. Looking back, she has been empowering me and making me a strong woman.

What are some values you live by?
Justice and compassion.

Why did you start this business?
When I was looking for a space as my studio in Singapore, I faced two problems. I couldn’t find a space for fashion designers and I didn’t like working alone. I still don’t. I was determined to solve this problem, and that’s why I started Some Random Workspace.

What do you hope to achieve with your business?
A platform that enables designers to maximize their full potential.

What is your idea of success?
Seeing designers from Some Random Workspace become successful in their own ways.

What is one piece of advice you would give to aspiring women entrepreneurs?
One of my favorite quotes: “The only time you run out of chances is when you stop taking them.” Live with no regrets.
